School Programs

The seven-week school component of Lent 4.5 provides an opportunity for young people in parochial schools, religious education programs, or Christian Sunday schools to learn about the themes of Lent 4.5 at their own level. Through a series of activities and lessons on the topics, they can participate in this Lenten church program.

The Lent 4.5 "School Resource Book" is a tool designed to help teachers creatively implement Lent 4.5 in grades K-8. The book is divided into seven sessions corresponding to the seven weekly themes of Lent 4.5.

Each weekly session of the "School Resource Book" has seven sections.

  • Background – A short essay introduces the topic of the week.
  • What the Church is Saying – Excerpts from various church document provide a faith foundation for the program.
  • Activities – There are numerous activities to engage students in the content of the material and help them learn about the issue. From the options, teachers can choose activities which are appropriate to the grade level they are teaching.
  • Lesson Plan – This section takes one of the activities and fleshes it out into a brief lesson. Teachers can simply follow the directions or modify the lesson to suit the age level of their class.
  • Prayer – Younger students may simply listen to the teacher reading the prayer. Older students may join together in reciting it.
  • Action Steps – This offers practical guidance on how families can change their daily habits of consumption to live more simply and be rooted in the principles of Gospel justice and care for God’s creation. It gives students an opportunity to consider how they can make changes in their own personal and family lives.
  • Additional Resources – Supplementary resources provide more information and links to related materials that can support teaching the content of Lent 4.5.

The "School Resource Book" comes in two versions:

  • Catholic parochial school version
  • Christian Sunday school version

Imagine if the Earth were divided equally among all of us. Each person would receive 4.5 acres. Now imagine that everything you need – food, energy, home, clothing, gadgets – must come from those 4.5 acres. But it takes 22.3 acres to maintain the average American lifestyle. There is a new way of observing Lent that helps us care for God’s creation by taking steps toward using only our fair share of its resources. Moving in the direction of 4.5 is essential for anyone walking in the footsteps of Jesus today.

Our Ministry

Lent 4.5 is a seven-week faith formation program which inspires and informs Christian communities on how to use the traditional Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to protect God’s creation, embrace Gospel justice and nurture spiritual fulfillment. It offers practical opportunities for people of faith to apply the values of Christian Simplicity to their everyday lives.
