Catholic Social Teaching Enters its Ecological Phase
Ascension, St Agnes, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Francis of Assisi, St Williams and Assumption High School are the Louisville Community parishes participating Lent 4.5. As a small part of the Lent 4.5 program, we will be offering a menu of different opportunities for large group activities at all of our parishes.
These include:
Ash Wednesday Week – Christian Simplicity: A Compassionate Life
February 18 – 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Movie “Brother Son, Sister Moon” – an inspiring example of Christian simplicity as exemplified in the life of St. Francis. A discussion will follow.

1st Week of Lent – Food: Buying and Eating
Thursday, February 25 – 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Buying and Preparing Local Food – a presentation by Sarah Fritschner,
Sarah, who has served as food editor at the Washington Post and the Louisville Courier-Journal, is the author of the Express Lane cookbook series, Sarah Fritschner’s Derby Start to Finish, and Sarah Fritschner’s Holidays. Her work also has appeared in Cook’s Illustrated, Gourmet, and Food & Wine. She is a frequent guest on regional food and cooking television shows and a popular speaker and teacher of culinary techniques.

2nd Week of Lent – Consumption: Buying Less and Wasting Less
Thursday, March 4 – 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Movie “The Story of Stuff” and a presentation on the effects of consumerism by Phyllis Fitzgerald. Phyllis has been an environmental educator and activist for more than 30 years, serving in government, corporate, non-profit and school settings. She has taught, written, and presented many programs about sustainable living at The Courier-Journal, WAVE3 TV, community organizations, and other events throughout the state.

Movie “Flow” – Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century - The World Water Crisis. Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.

5th Week of Lent – Transportation: Getting Around
March 25 – 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Environmental Justice Tour of Louisville – American’s poorest neighborhoods are also the most polluted. This bus tour will visit West End Louisville’s contaminated sites in and explore the threats they pose to the local community. Participants will also be introduced the range of environmental health concerns, including toxic chemicals, particulate matter emissions, air and water quality. It will be an opportunity to learn how our health is impacted by the environment and receive resources for action. Bus space is limited. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling 502.452.2749 or emailing beth@earthandspiritcenter.org.

In 2010, five Catholic parishes and one Catholic high school are participating in Lent 4.5 – Ascension Church, St Agnes Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, St. Francis of Assisi Church, St William Church and Assumption High School.
Consider one or all of the above to make this Lent a time to refocus our Christian lives.
