Joe Mitchell is a Catholic priest and member of the Passionist Community. Inspired and guided by the vision of cultural historian Thomas Berry’s understanding the Earth to be a single sacred community, he founded the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center in Louisville, KY in 2005, and now serves as president and resident teacher.
Fr. Joe received training in theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago (M.Div.) and earned a graduate degree in Eastern Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies (M.A). He has been a longtime student of contemplative studies and a practitioner of meditation. Personal training in Christian, Hindu and Buddhist meditation has taken him to numerous monasteries, ashrams, and retreats in the United States, Europe, India, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
Fr. Joe’s current work focuses on the emerging scientific cosmology, the implications it has for our human institutions, and the consequences it has for human self-understanding. He also teaches courses in meditation, bringing together the wisdom of eastern and western spiritual traditions, with an application of ancient meditative wisdom for living in a complex modern world.
