Class Description
It is not always easy, in this age of divisive rhetoric, to be truly attentive, curious, and respectful of others, even when we disagree. In this course we will engage in experiential exercises to strengthen our abilities to hold space for another, to listen and question others in such a way that they may feel seen and valued. By doing so, two people have a greater possibility of finding common ground. The art of conversation can be studied by bringing mindfulness to elements such as holding space, eye contact, focusing and tracking social cues as well as content. Learning to ask questions that invite reflection and further expression deepens connection and clarity. We will use chapters from “How to Know a Person (The Art of Seeing others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen)” by David Brooks as a resource.
