In our city and at the state and federal level, new policies meant to “increase public safety” are introduced with fervor and regularity. These are issues of major concern to us all. Sadly, though, public safety and racism are deeply intertwined in our country, and efforts to “increase safety” too often violate civil rights and cause real harm to people of color.
Class Description
In this class, we’ll examine hot topics in Louisville safety, such as,
- a possible new $500 million dollar jail,
- the detention and deportation of immigrants,
- secret license plate readers,
- proposed new first responder training facility, all with powerful implications for Black and brown communities. And we’ll ask the question: “Can we create public safety without racism?”
