Class Description
Humans have a biological negativity bias. We tend to focus on threats and other negative experiences. This challenges our ability to notice and appreciate positive experiences in our lives. The result is excessive reactivity, stress, and unhappiness. This course will teach HEAL, a research supported strategy for being mindful of positive experiences and absorbing them so the have lasting neurological impact. HEAL is an acronym for Have a positive experience, Enrich the experience, Absorb the experience, and Link the positive experience to some relates negative material. Practicing HEAL increases our awareness on the many good things in our life. It also builds inner resources at a neurological level strengthen our ability to have a happier life in the face of the inevitable stresses and challenges we experience.
Because this process strengthens helpful neural connections, it is sometimes referred to as “positive neuroplasticity training.” This workshop would be a brief, non-technical version. The intervention was developed by Dr. Rick Hanson at the UC Berkley Greater Good Science Center and is detailed in his book, Hardwiring Happiness. Tony Zipple is a certified trainer in this intervention.
Program Objectives:
- Identify the basis and corrosive impact of our negativity bias on our happiness and well being
- Learn HEAL, a research supported strategy for identifying and absorbing the good experiences in our lives.
- Describe the way that HEAL helps build positive neural connections that counter our natural negativity bias.
- Develop a personal plan for making HEAL a habit.
